WHITEFISH — The Butte Miners are returning home from Northwest Montana as champions of the Sapa/Johnsrud Tournament.

Butte beat the Spokane Cannons 10-8 in Sunday’s championship game, the Miner’s third straight win on the tournament. The Miners beat the Lethbridge Elks 9-7 in Sunday morning’s semifinal game.

Both of Butte’s wins Sunday avenged losses earlier in the tournament.

Nate LeProwse, whose two-run single capped a four-run fifth inning that proved to be the divergence in the win, went 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Kash Kelly poked a pair of singles, while Trey Hoagland, who doubled, scored three runs.

The Miners also got singles from Quin Summers, Dyllan “Kruk” Lane, Renzy Doherty and Logan LaFromboise.

Koby Doherty started and went four innings for the win. Zach Hart, who also drove in a run, pitched three innings for the save.

The Miners jumped out to a 6-0 lead with three runs in each of the first two innings, and Butte never trailed.

Butte is back on the road Wednesday when the Miners take on Bozeman in a nine-inning conference game. That starts a run of 12 conference games that lead up to the Class AA State tournament, which begins July 27 in Missoula.
