Butte High boys win Old Works; BC’s Beau McGree takes Highland View title

The prep golf season is only a week old, but both Mining City programs are already making plenty of noise on the links.

Highland View Golf Course – Butte Central Invitational

The Butte Central Invitational opened the week at Highland View Golf Course, and the Maroons wasted no time putting their stamp on the season.

Senior Beau McGree fired a smooth 75 to win medalist honors on the Maroons’ home track. Will McGree was right there too, carding a 79 for a fourth-place finish. Teammate Connor Kachmarik checked in with an 84, helping BC hold off most of the field and finish just two strokes behind team champion Gallatin.

Butte High showed off its depth, led by Lane Lisac (87) and Teague Sullivan (95), while Gus Struznik (99) and Miles Choquette (99) added solid rounds.

On the girls’ side, Kate DeShaw took control for the Bulldogs. The junior shot a 78 to win medalist honors, while teammates Keeley Johnston (92) and Sage Leber (94) both cracked the top five. BC’s Mya McGree added a 103, giving the Maroons a top-15 finisher.

Gallatin edged Butte Central 323–325 in the boys’ team race, while the Gallatin girls also took top honors. But Highland View left no doubt: both Butte teams will be in the mix this season.

Old Works Golf Course – Anaconda Tournament

If Monday’s opener was about proving they belong, Tuesday’s trip to Anaconda was about taking over.

On the Nicklaus-designed Old Works layout, the Butte High boys dominated the field, shooting a team +20 to win by 13 strokes over Belgrade.

Chase Choquette led the way with an even-par 72, good for runner-up honors. Right behind him were teammates Jack Muhlestein (+1, 73) and Teagan Yelenich (+2, 74). The trio swept second through fourth place individually, with Rigley Vincent (89) rounding out the scoring.

Butte Central stayed steady as well. Will McGree posted another top-five with a +3 round of 75, while Beau McGree (79), Connor Kachmarik (84), and Kelton Berger (93) pushed the Maroons to fourth place in the team standings.

The girls’ leaderboard featured plenty of Mining City names again. DeShaw followed her Highland View win with a 96, while BC’s Mya McGree posted a 98. Johnston (105) and Leber (106) also contributed for the Bulldogs.

A Loud Start for the Mining City

Two tournaments in two days, and two loud statements: the Bulldogs and Maroons are both for real. Between Butte High’s team win at Old Works and BC’s individual medalist at Highland View, the Mining City has already left its mark on the young golf season — and there’s no sign they’ll be quieting down anytime soon.
