LAUREL — Butte Central senior Gater Yelenich finds himself in a tie for 13th place after the first day of the Class A State golf tournament at the Laurel Golf Club. (Results)
Yelenich hit an 86 on the par-72 course. He is tied with Ryan Adolph of Billings Central, Ethan Carey of Glendive, Matt Hansen of Sidney and Johnny Nix of Whitefish. That puts Yelenich three shots out of the top 10.
Connor Walsh of Billings Central tops the boys’ leaderboard heading into Friday’s final round. He shot a 77 to take a one-shot lead over Hamilton’s Tristan Hanson. Carson Hackman of Laurel and Cameron Kahle of Whitefish are tied for third at 80.
Butte Central senior Cole Johnson opened with a 98, and Maroon sophomore Austin Harrington hit 100.
Billings Central leads the team standings at 335. Hamilton is second at 339, followed by Laurel at 341. Butte Central doesn’t have enough players for a team score.
Laurel leads the way on the girls side a 368. Corvallis is second at 402, followed by Whitefish at 406.
Corvallis’ Macee Greenwood and Laurel’s Hannah Adams are tied for the lead in the race for girls’ medalist honors at 83. Haylee Adams of Laurel is one back at 84.
