Wrestling roundup: Butte High rules again in Gillette, tallies points at CMR

Butte High Weeded out the wrestling field again in Wyoming, five Bulldog girls earned place-winnings in Great Falls, a Butte High freshman placed in his first varsity meet and Butte Central put up four points in a showcase invitational.
Such is the short roundup for high school wrestlers from Butte for Friday and Saturday competition.
In Gillette, Wyoming, Butte High went 7-1 in the Pat Weede Memorial tournament, including a 43-36 championship dual meet victory over Thunder Basin of Gillette. It was a repeat win for the Bulldogs, who entered as the defending champions.
Butte High also beat St. Mary’s of Bismarck, North Dakota, 49-30, Natrona of Casper, Wyoming, 54-22, Star Valley High of Afton, Wyoming, 43-27, Sheridan, Wyoming, 55-22, Campbell County High of Gillette 54-16 and Scottsbluff, Nebraska, 51-23. The Bulldogs’ only loss was by 45-32 to Dickinson, North Dakota. Teams from five states competed in the tournament.
Two Bulldog seniors, Maverick McEwen, wrestling at 165 pounds, and Kade Schleeman, in the 285-and-under weight class, earned Outstanding Wrestler awards for their weight classes. McEwen was 7-0 in the tourney and one another bout by forfeit. He pinned five opponents in an elapsed time of 6 minutes, 8 seconds. Schleeman was 8-0 in the tourney and had five pins in 13:36 total time. He is 18-0 so far this season.
“The kids did a phenomenal job of competing,” Butte High head coach Cody Johnston said. “The competition at this tournament is no joke, and we had eight grueling duals. It seemed like every dual someone else stepped up.
“More pleasing to me than first place is that our team got many compliments from spectators and tournament workers on our kids and how they represent themselves with class during the competition. That’s a huge thing.”
Ryder McEwen, wrestling mostly at 138 pounds, also was unbeaten in the tourney for the Bulldogs.

Bradley Doyle was the Butte High freshman to place in his varsity debut tourney. Wrestling as part of Butte High Team Two that was sent to vie in the CMR Holiday Classic tourney in Great Falls, Doyle placed seventh at 113 pounds. He outpointed Kyson Baker of Billings Skyview 6-3 in their consolation final.
Defending state Class AA champion Billings West won the CMR Holiday team title with 270 points while Great Falls High was second with 250.5 and Flathead High of Kalispell third with 229. Butte High Team Two scored 46.5 points for 32nd place I the 56-team field. Butte Central tallied four points. Tournament results are available on the trackwrestling.com Web site.
“We sent our second team to the biggest tournament in Montana with the CMR Holiday Classic,” Johnston said. “The kids wrestled fantastic, picking up many varsity wins, but, more importantly, varsity experience. Bradley Doyle had a great weekend, placing seventh in a very competitive 113-pound weight class.”
The CMR Holiday Classic had an accompanying girls’ tourney, too, and Butte High had successful moments in it, too.
Sophomore Mattie Stepan was the runner-up in the 152-pound class, going undefeated in the meet until dropping a 6-2 decision to Celia Jaeger of Class AA power Billings Senior in the championship bout. Neveah Grunhuvd placed third at 132 pounds with a 1:30 pin over Faye Holland of Dillon in their match for third place. Sophie Grunhuvd took fourth place, ending her run in the tourney with a 7-5 overtime loss to Lucia Schlapfer of Missoula Big Sky in their consolation final.
Bouts for fifth place included Aydin Gonzales of Butte High wining at 114 pounds on a 1:39 pin over Blake Follette of Poplar, and Peyton Liva winding up in sixth after a tough 2-1 loss to Karlin Payne of Livingston in their fifth-place match at 100 pounds.
Billings Senior won the CMR Holiday girls’ team title with 332 points while Ronan was second with 178 and Flathead third with 168. Butte High scored 122 points and finished seventh in the 49-team field.
