Wilson cracks top 10 twice on Deer Valley moguls

DEER VALLEY, Utah – Butte mogulist Brad Wilson wrapped up the pre-Olympic portion of the World Cup freestyle season with a seventh place on Friday after placing seventh on Thursday at the Deer Valley meet. 

A United States Winter Olympian in both 2014 and 2018, Wilson has been seeking his third Olympic spot in freestyle skiing men’s moguls. Announcements are expected this weekend or Monday regarding final berths. 

The Deer Valley event was a double with separate scoring runs each day. The men’s winner on Friday was Horishima Ikamura of Japan while Canadian legend Mikael Kingsbury placed second and Walter Wallberg of Sweden placed third. Wilson was the highest American finisher. Cole McDonald was next-best for Team USA, in 15th. 

Wilson’s ninth-place Thursday was second among Americans. George McQuinn was in sixth place. Kingsbury was the winner with Ikuma second and Sugimoto Kosuke of Japan third. 

The women’s podium placers Friday were Anri Kawamura of Japan, first; Jakara Anthony of Australia, second; and Perrine Laffont of France, third. Olivia Giaccio of the United States placed fourth, and teammates Elizabeth Lemley, Kai Owens and Hannah Soar were fifth, sixth and seventh. Another American, Tess Johnson placed ninth. 

Thursday, Laffont won while Kawamura was the runner-up and Anthony placed third. The higher American finishers were Giaccio, fifth; Lemley, sixth; and Johnson, 10th.
