Wildkats cruise to third-place trophy

 By Derek Hendrickson

HAMILTON — The Columbia Falls Wildkats absolutely expected to hoist a trophy on Saturday night of the state tournament, just not the third place one.

Columbia Falls rebounded from an opening round loss to Butte Central to win 3 straight games, including two where the mercy rule was invoked.

The Wildkats flirted with a 40 point lead for much of the second half before finally going up 67-26 with about 2 minutes left.

Winter Kemppainen had 18 points and 9 boards to lead both categories and certainly could have had much more but head coach. Cary Finberg rotated through his bench as the lead grew.

The game was only tied once, at 2, before Columbia Falls went on a seven point run and never looked back.

The Wildkats led 20-11 after one and 34-15 at the half.

While the game was well in hand an 18-0 surge to open the second half showed the large crowd just how good Columbia Falls is.

The Wildkats finish the year 22-2 and will return the majority of this team next year as they graduate only three seniors.

Frenchtown ends its season at 15-9 and were unable to produce the type of effort that saw them lose to C Falls  53-43 in the Northwestern Divisional championship last Saturday.
