Wibaux tops Fairview for third place at State C

Wibaux captured the third-place trophy with a 58-45 revenge victory over Fairview Saturday evening in the consolation final of the state Class C high school boys’ basketball tournament at the Butte Civic Center.
The win avenged a 66-53 loss the Longhorns suffered to Fairview in the first game of the tournament on Thursday.
Wibaux sank eight of 10 free throws in the last 2 minutes, 39 seconds to secure the victory. Fairview had rallied to within 50-45 of the Longhorns on a two 3-point baskets by Monte Cayko and one by Justin Bieber.
The Warriors’ last chance with time melting away then was to foul to stop the clock and maybe gain ball possession. However, Wibaux’s prowess at the foul line foiled the strategy.
Wibaux led 13-11 after one quarter, but Fairvew gained a 27-26 edge by halftime with Cayko netting a trey from long distance at the buzzer.
Fairview’s last lead occurred at 2:07 of the third quarter when an Alex Taylor jumper from inside the key put the Warriors ahead 34-33. Chase Bertelsen answered for Wibaux with a rebound basket and then Jacob Bakken drilled a 3-pointer for a 38-34 Longhorns advantage going into the last frame.
Wibaux finished the season with a 25-4 record and was led in its last game by Bakken with 26 points and nine rebounds, all on the defensive boards. Bertelsen finished with 15 points. Fairview, 25-3, got 16 points from Cayko and 11 from Bieber. Ben Hardy pulled down nine rebounds.
