The Butte Central Maroons spent much of Friday night right on the doorstep.
The Maroons (1-2) played as solid a football game as you can without finding then endzone as they fell to Whitefish, 30-0 on the Bob Green Field.
Butte Central traded punches with the Bulldogs (3-0) before quarterback Fynn Ridgeway hit Jaxsen Schlauch with a 7-yard strike to take the lead 7-0 with 5:26 left in the first quarter. And that 7-0 lead sat on the scoreboard for the next 35 minutes as a lightning delay forced both teams into their locker rooms and the Maroon faithful running for cover from the heavy downpour.
After the lightning delay, the Maroons held the Bulldogs scoreless throughout the rest of the first half. Butte Central was on the doorstep twice in the second quarter but had their opportunities washed away by slick field conditions and a goal-line fumble.
Trailing 7-0 at the break, the Maroons again made it to the redzone before being turned over on downs by the Bulldogs on their opening drive.
After trading turnovers with Whitefish, Butte Central’s luck began to runout. With 6:27 left in the third quarter, the Maroons ran an option toward their own sideline but the pitch bounced off the hand of the intended target and right into the hands of Whitefish’s Logan Conklin. Conklin raced 46 yards on the scoop and score to put the Bulldogs ahead 14-0.
Whitefish used a surprise onside kick to get the ball back at the Butte Central 49-yard line. After making their way into the redzone, the Maroons held Whitefish to a 28-yard Ryder Barnowski field goal that stretched the lead to 17-0.
The fourth quarter saw the Bulldogs score twice more. Cody Berry broke loose with 6:27 left in the contest to score on a 16-yard run, but the corresponding PAT was no good.
Then late in the game Decker Wold busted up the gut for a 46-yard score with 1:12 to go. The Bulldogs led 30-0 before Butte Central would be on the doorstep again.
The determined Maroons then went to their hurry-up offense to gain three straight first downs as the clock ticked away. Then quarterback Luke Garrison hit a Zane Moodry over the middle with six seconds left on the clock. Moodry broke two tackles but was eventually tripped up at the 1-yard line as the final horn sounded.
The Maroons head on the road next Friday to take on Class A powerhouse Hamilton at 7 p.m.
