White, Broncs break Maroons in Frenchtown

FRENCHTOWN — Butte Central fans will remember the name Carter White for years to come.

The Frenchtown junior returned two kickoffs for touchdowns Friday night, and the Broncs knocked off the Maroons 38-27 for a crucial Western A victory.

The loss drops the Maroons to 2-5 on the season. It also means the Maroons will not qualify for the Class A playoffs.

Butte Central also heads home with a loss after the Maroons battled back from a 17-0 deficit to take the lead in the fourth quarter.

The White returns, though, were back breakers.

“It was an incredible comeback,” BC coach Don Peoples Jr. said. “I’m extremely proud of the kids, but you just can’t give up two kick returns.”

Frenchtown built a 17-0 lead on a 27-yard field goal by Gavin Palen and two long touchdown passes from Eli Quinn. Quinn hit Devin Shelton for a 75-yard strike before finding Connor Michaud for a 67 yards.

Konnor Pochervina ran for an 18-yard touchdown to get the Maroons on the board. Ethan Andersch’s extra point cut the lead to 17-7.

The Maroons squib kicked to try to keep it out of the hands of a pair of dangerous Frenchtown returners. White got his hands on the ball after the Pocherinva TD and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown.

Central got back on the board before the half, and Luke Garrison hit Kyle Holter for 22 yards, cutting the lead to 24-13 at the half.

Garrison hit Holter for a 9-yard score in the third quarter, and BC took a 27-24 lead when Pochervina punched it in from three out early in the fourth.

The lead did not last long, however. White returned the kickoff 80 yards for his second score.

Frenchtown put the game away when Quinn hit Shelton for a 15-yard strike, his third passing TD of the game.

“The defense played great all night,” Peoples said. “We gave up a couple of pass plays when they missed the tackle and they turned into long plays. But overall, our defense played stout all night.

“Peyton Hicks is one of the best backs in the state, and we really bottled him up tonight.”

Peoples praised his players for their effort.

“It was a game we could have won,” the coach said. “They really battled back and took the lead. Frenchtown is a great big physical football team. I’m just really proud of the comeback and how hard they fought. We moved the ball well after the first quarter. We just gave up some big plays.”

Complete stats are not available for the game, but Peoples pointed to the play of Pochervina, Jensen, Holter and running back Eyston Lakkala.

“Both our backs ran really well tonight, and I think Luke had his best game as a quarterback tonight,” Peoples said. “Kyle Holter had an outstanding game tonight.”

The Maroons have next Friday off. They close the season at home Oct. 22 against Stevensville.
