Western’s Howell named Frontier Player of Week

WHITEFISH — Brian Howell of Montana Western was selected the Frontier Conference’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Howell is a 6-foot-2 sophomore forward from Wilmington, North Carolina.

Montana Western won two games at the Cactus Classic in Gilbert, Arizona. The Bulldogs beat Ottawa (Arizona) 93-82 and routed Lethbridge 102-69.

Howell averaged 17 points, eight rebounds, 1.5 assists and one assist. He was 14 of 22 from the field (64 percent) and 6 of 9 for free throws.

Dennis Flowers III of Carroll College and Darius Henderson of Rocky Mountain College were also nominated for the award.

Women’s award: Markaela Francis, Rocky Mountain College

Francis is a 6-foot senior from Great Falls. Rocky Mountain lost 69-65 to MSU-Billings 69-65, an NCAA, Division II school and Rocky’s crosstown rival.

Francis scored 32 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. She was 10 of 12 from the field (83 percent) and 11 of 14 (79 percent) from the free throw line.
