Western women’s hoops opens in Canada

DILLON — The University of Montana Western women’s basketball season will start this weekend with two home games against the Universtiy of Lethbridge on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday night, the women’s game will start at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s team following at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the women will begin at 2 p.m. with the men following at 4 p.m.

The women return four starters from a team that finished 15-13 overall and 5-9 in conference play in 2011-12. The University of Lethbridge had a 7-14 overall record to finish off the 2011-12 season.

First-year Montana Western head coach Lindsay Woolley, a native of Missoula, is eager to get the season started.

“With a completely new system the learning curve is steep and these first couple games are a little earlier than I would have liked them to be,” Woolley said. “However, we need to get on the floor and play against some fresh faces to see where we are at. We have made great strides the past couple weeks and are on track to be ready for the heart of our schedule. Our primary focus has been working on our spacing within our offense and establishing an identity defensively. We are nowhere close to being a finished product but I like the mentality we are starting to develop on both ends of the floor.”
