Western women roll to opening-round win

LEWISTON, Idaho — Montana Western picked up a first-round win in the NAIA Women’s Basketball Championship Friday, and boy did the Bulldogs make it look easy.

Brinley Fitzgerald scored 21 points to lead four Montana Western players in double figures Friday, and the Bulldogs routed Benedictine-Mesa (Arizona) 81-36. (Stats)

The Bulldogs led 34-14 at halftime and 58-20 after three quarters.

Paige Holmes and Shainy Mack each added 14 points for Western, which got 13 from Jenni Weber. Holmes joined Fitzgerald with seven rebounds.

Also for Western, Mesa King tossed in six, Natali denning scored five, and Sydney Sheridan and Jayden Winslow each scored four.

Savanna Crockett’s 17 points and 13 rebounds paced Benedictine-Mesa, which closes the pandemic season at 11-2.

The Bulldogs (17-9) will play Westmont (California) at 1 p.m. (Mountain Time) on Saturday.
