Western closes spring drills

DILLON — The University of Montana Western Football team brought their spring practice to a close Saturday afternoon at Vigilante Field.  The Bulldogs took the field for a noon kickoff, wrapping up the third spring practice with head coach Ryan Nourse at the helm.

“We were excited to take the field and compete for the final time this spring.  We have worked extremely hard and diligently to make improvements in all aspects of the game,” Coach Ryan Nourse said after the game. “We feel that we have made improvements these last few weeks and need to continue to improve as we head into the summer.”

Billings sophomore Ben Sulser led the Bulldog defense. He finished the day with seven tackles and an interception.

Senior Connor Fuller also had a big da,y contributing six tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. Phil Selin had a pair of sacks, and freshman Tyrell Penner was able to get to the quarterback for a sack as well.

Other Bulldog defenders who made their mark on the day were Reno Ward with four tackles and Joe Coker, who added 3 tackles. Manhattan’s Jesse McCloud contributed with four tackles and an interception from his safety position, where he earned conference honors following last season.

Tyler Hulse and Dylan Kramer led the Bulldog offensive attack. Hulse, from Helena, completed 22 of 36 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a score.

Kramer, a sophomore from Laurel, rushed for 58 yards on 13 carries. He also had three receptions for 19 yards.

Sam Rutherford helped the Bulldog offense finishing his day with 48 yards on eight touches.

The receiving corps was led by Rashad Peniston who had seven receptions for 115 yards and one touchdown. Beau Brekke and Tyler Bergren each had three receptions. Brekke also had a rush for 23 yards.

Sophomore Matt Lickfold added three receptions and a touchdown grab of 25 yards. Sophomore Josh Lords added a 45-yard reception.

The Bulldogs will open the 2013 season at home against Southern Oregon University Sept. 7.
