West guns for four out of five

When East meets West Saturday in the 67th Montana East-West Shrine Game at Naranche Stadium, the boys from the West will be looking for their fourth win in five years.

Last year in Great Falls, the East team snapped West’s three game winning streak in the All-Star football game with a 23-12 win.

The West won 24-3 in 2011 in Laurel. When the game was in Butte in 2010, West was best with a 34-18 victory at a packed Bulldog Memorial Stadium.

West won 20-17 in overtime in Great Falls in 2009, halting a five-game East winning streak.

All time, the East leads the Shrine Game series 37-29.

A West win Saturday would give this side of the state its best run since the West won four straight from 1962-65.

Eight players from the Mining City will play for the West. Six of those players — Butte High’s Drew Schleeman, Anthony “Chunk” Moritz, Nick Butorovich, Bryce Armstrong, Zach Bunney and Jon Allen — are returning to the scene of Butte’s biggest football victory in a generation.

The Bulldogs beat Bozeman 38-36 Nov. 16 to win the school’s first Class AA state title in 21 years.

Butte Central graduates Joe Joyce and Northey Tretheway will also represent the Mining City on the West roster.

If one of the Butte players ends up taking home the Roger Silvernale Memorial Trophy as the Most Outstanding Player, he will be in some pretty select company.

Dick Wilson of Butte won the award in its first year, 1965.

Butte’s Dave Carriger won the award on the defensive side in 1979. Josh Paffhausen, who went on to have a solid career with the Montana Grizzlies, won the offensive award in 1993.

University of Montana quarterback Shay Smithwick-Hann won the Silvernale Trophy in the 2010 game in Butte.

Tickets for the game are available at the Butte Civic Center box office. Click here to buy tickets online.
