Wachholz downs Bado for State handball title

Butte handball player Brett Badovinac had to settle for just one State title this weekend.

Badovinac defended his title in the Masters Division for players older than 40 at the Montana State Singles Handball Tournament, which was played at the Butte Elks and the Fitness Courts.

His bid for the Open Division title, though, fell short to Kalispell’s Chance Wachholz.

Wachholz overcame a 20-16 deficit to beat Badovinac 21-20, 21-9 in the championship match Sunday at the Elks.

The title was the third for Wachholz, who brought home the title in 2009 and 2013. He also was also part of a team that won the last three open doubles titles.

The Open and Masters divisions were combined this tournament, and the bottom bracket served as the Masters division.

Badovinac beat Brian Hamilton of Sheridan, Wyoming, in the semifinals/Masters chipper on Saturday. Wachholz topped Butte’s Cole Salo in the other semifinal.

Butte’s Don Foley won the A Division, which is the consolation of the Open Division. Foley and Badovinac are the two-time defending Masters doubles champions.

In the Diamond Masters for players 70 and older, former Butte resident Tom Morris of Billings added to his legacy.

Morris defended his Diamond Masters title by beating Wally Page of Florence in two games. That brings Morris’ singles handball State title tally to nine. He has a Masters crown, four Golden Masters championships and two Super Golden Masters titles to go along with the two Diamond Masters titles.

Morris is also the reigning national champion in the Diamond Masters division.

Montana Tech freshman basketball player John Chapman of Frenchtown won the B title, beating Butte’s Skyler Criscuolo in the championship match.
