Vigilantes rally in 7th to deny Maroons

HELENA – Ella Pickett knocked in the winning run as East Helena rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and a 7-6 thin win over Butte Central Tuesday in Southwestern A Conference high school girls’ softball action.
Belle Surginer singled just ahead of Pickett’s game-ending hit to set up the Vigilantes’ walkoff. Surginer was also the winning pitcher and delivered the tying run with her seventh-inning single.
Butte Central had gone ahead 6-5 in the top of the last inning. Brooke Badovinac was hit by a pitch to reach base and came home on a passed ball with the tying run and Hattie Mehring reached on an error, then, after Chloie Stillwagon put down a sacrifice bunt, was knocked in by Jaeden Berger for the 6-5 edge.
The back-and-forth game saw the teams trade leads several times.
Butte Central’s extra-base hits were doubles by Badovinac and Berger. The Maroons also got a single from Kathryn Lalicker.
The weather-plagued Maroons’ program this year is 0-4 for the season and looking to practice outside for the first time on Wednesday. This weekend, the BC girls will head to Frenchtown for the annual Frenchtown Invitational tourney and are scheduled to face Ronan and Frenchtown on Friday, then Whitefish and Libby on Saturday. Hopes are now for Butte Central to hold its home opener on May 1 against Dillon.
