Eagles sweep team wins at Stodden Park

Two victories at No. 1 singles highlighted Butte High’s day Tuesday as the Bulldogs took on Missoula Big Sky in a tennis dual

The battle at Stodden Park closed out a home stand that saw the Bulldogs play in Butte three times in seven days.

Missoula Big Sky won the girls’ dual 6-2. The Eagles won the boys’ battle 5-3, taking advantage of three forfeit wins against the shorthanded Bulldogs.

Butte High, though, picked up some huge wins on the day.

None was bigger than in No. 1 singles. That’s where Butte High’s Ashlyn Burnett battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the first game to beat Brooke Williams 7-5, 7-5. The win secures the No. 2 seed for Burnett at divisionals.

Sevanna Challeen and Ashley Olson teamed for a victory at No. 2 doubles, edging Hollin Keitz and Andrea McComas in a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (3) thriller.

At No. 1 doubles, Katie Kellier and Brooke McGrath went to a tiebreaker before falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 to Kaden Easter and Amber Williams.

Sage Murphy, Rebecca Radoicich and Elli Quist also played singles for the Bulldogs, putting up a battle in losses to Landon Roberts, Addie Winward and Maddie McInnis.

Riley Laslovich and Charlie Ghordizi downed Butte’s Frankie Cox and Maya Dare at No. 3 doubles, and Big Sky’s Morgan McClung and Avery Wolfe topped Isabel Russo and Mia McCarthy at No. 4.

In the boys’ No. 1 singles, Butte’s Jason Johns downed Jacob Kientz in straight sets for the Bulldogs.

Johns and Sam Sampson, who fell to Max Strebis of Big Sky in No. 2 singles, teamed to pick up a doubles victory. They beat Isaac Dossier and Max Christiansen in straight sets.

Kershaw Mellott and Cole Skeel fell 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 to Big Sky’s Cole Campbell and Jake Gardanier.

Butte’s Thad Holdsworth took down Elliot Boykin 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in No. 3 singles.

The Bulldogs close out the regular season next Tuesday at Belgrade. The divisional tournament will be May 19-20 in Missoula.
