UPTOP/ Mining City Basketball set to host tournament this weekend

By John Robbins

For any basketball fans in the area, there will be plenty of it played over the weekend in the Mining City.

Uptop travel league and Mining City Basketball are kicking off a boys and girl basketball tournament tomorrow through the weekend. Grades will range from 4th to 8th grade and games will be played at East Middle School and Butte High School.

“We have 60 teams registered, and there will be 120 games tomorrow” said tournament and travel league director Paul McCarthy. It’s an exciting thing for Butte and the youth of Butte, plus there are some really talented up and coming players and teams.

“There is a jumble of Butte teams, anyone you see wearing UPTOP, those will be Butte teams”, said McCarthy. The UPTOP travel program has really taken off and continues to grow, there were no shortage of players to sign up this year, as the program contains multiple teams in each grade.

Organized basketball doesn’t get to start until 5th grade now and that is a long time to wait to start learning the fundamentals of the game, this program allows Butte and its coaches to develop skills early on and help make the high school level successful.

Feeder programs, it’s what makes the world go around, and kudos to coach Luedtke, Paul and everyone who makes this possible for Butte.

Game times will kick off as early as 9am Saturday at both gyms and run until about 7 or 8 pm.

Butte Sports will be at both gyms throughout the day, if you want your team, or athlete featured please send us a write up and or images to mail@buttesports.com
