Unbeaten Broncs ‘explode’ in 40-0 win over Bulldogs

BILLINGS — For most the first quarter of Friday night’s football game at Daylis Staduim, Butte High held its own against undefeated Billings Senior.

Then the roof caved in on the Bulldogs, as the Broncs erupted for 27 points in the second quarter on their way to a 40-0 victory.

Gabe Sulser caught a short pass from Nate Dick and turned it into an 82-yard touchdown as the Broncs broke open the scoreless tie.

“He’s a pretty special player,” Butte High coach Arie Grey said.

Sulser had a hand in three more touchdowns in the second quarter as the Broncs broke the game open in the blink of an eye.

Sulser also scored on a 4-yard run and a 38-yard pass. After Dick hit Jake Orvis on an 18-yard score, Sulser tossed a 40-yard TD to Colton Eliason on a trick play.

Dick added a 3-yard run in the third quarter.

“We were playing well,” Grey said. “They were only up 7-0, and we were really controlling the tempo. They just exploded in the second quarter, and we didn’t respond to it.”

Butte High gave the start at quarterback to freshman Tommy Mellott. He split time with sophomore Kash Kelly in place of injured junior Ty Peterson.

Grey said Mellott held his own despite the score.

“Tommy stepped in a played well,” Grey said. “He spread the ball around the field and made some good decisions. He’s going to be a special player.”

The Bulldogs put together several drives, they just didn’t finish them, the Grey said.

“We moved the ball a tone against a good team,” the coach said.

Butte High also used the Wildcat offense with receiver Kiley Caprara taking snaps, and that led to some nice plays for the Bulldogs.

“He’s able to do so many good things with the ball in his hands,” Grey said of Caprara.

Senior defensive end Brian LaFond stood out on the defensive end for the Bulldogs.

“He’s a true warriors,” Grey said. “He plays hard every single play.”

Grey said he was particularly happy with how the Bulldogs responded in the second half. He said the coaches challenged the Bulldogs to play better at halftime.

“They battled,” Grey said. “I was pleased with how they played in the second half. They’re tough kids.”

The Broncs improved to 4-0 with the victory. Butte High fell to 1-4 with its third straight loss.

The Bulldogs will be back at home next Friday when they take on Great Falls Russell during Silver B’s Night at Naranche Stadium.

Grey said the Bulldogs will continue to grind it out.

“It’s a long season,” he said. “We’re so close. We’ve just got to continue to improve every day. It’s not going to be overnight. We’ve got to work hard every single day, and we will.”
