Montana Tech head women’s basketball coach Carly Sanon announced the first recruit signing for the Orediggers today. Townsend’s Tavia Rooney signed a letter of intent to attend Montana Tech next fall.

Rooney, a three-time first-team All-State selection, finished her career with 1,297 points and 1,022 rebounds. The Broadwater High School product averaged 14 points and 9 rebounds per game as a senior. Rooney turned in 19 double-doubles and had 51 during her entire high school career. Rooney also averaged over 2 blocks a game finishing with 60 on the season.

“As soon as I saw Tavia play, I knew she had to be an Oredigger,” Sanon said. “She is super athletic and gravitates to the ball. She is very competitive and a tenacious rebounder.  She is a great addition to our program.”

Rooney was the Helena Independent Record Player of the Year in 2017 and a two-time selection to the Great Falls Tribune Super State Team. She was named to the All-Tournament Team at the state tournament in 2018. Rooney was also a USA Today Second Team selection.

“After making my formal visit to Tech, I felt really confident about what this program had to offer,” Rooney said. “Coach Sanon and Coach Porter made me feel like I was already a part of their basketball family; they made me feel like I had something great to offer. I was also able to visit with some of the professors and it with no doubt felt like home.”

Rooney competed in volleyball for the Bulldogs as well. The two-year team captain was selected All-Conference.

Rooney was named Academic All-State eight times in the two sports. She is a member of the National Honor Society.

“Montana Tech is the complete package and I cannot wait to be an Oredigger,” she said. “Tech was the best option to pursue my degree in the medical field as well as be part of the women’s basketball program.”

Rooney plans on pursuing a degree in applied health and safety science.
