BOZEMAN — Montana State fans got a chance to see what Butte High fans have known for quite some time.
Tommy Mellott can play football.
The 2020 Butte High graduate, who was nicknamed “Touchdown Tommy” by teammates, was thrust into the starting quarterback position Saturday, and the Bobcats beat the University of Tennessee-Martin 26-7 in the second round of the NCAA FCS playoffs. (Stats)
Mellott ran for 180 yards and two touchdowns for the Bobcats, who improved to 10-2 on the season. He scored on runs of 1 and 73-yards. He also threw for 51 yards.
The long run came early in the fourth quarter, after the Bobcats took a 13-7 lead into the frame.
Isaiah Ifanse scored on a 17-yard run to ice the victory. Blake Glessner booted field goals of 34 and 30 yards.
Jay Woods scored on a 68-yard fumble recovery for the Skyhawks lone touchdown. UT-Martin closes the season at 10-3.
Mellott and the Bobcats will travel to Huntsville, Texas next Saturday to take on Sam Houston in the quarterfinals.
