Tommyknockers win again, pull into first-place tie

The Mining City Tommyknockers jumped out to a 10-3 lead and held on for a 10-6 Expedition League victory over the Pierre Trappers Friday night at 3 Legends Stadium. (Boxscore)

The victory pulled the Tommyknockers (11-8) into a first-place tie with Souris Valley Sabre Dogs in the second half of the Lewis Division. Butte’s team did its damage on just five hits, four of which were singles, as the Knockers worked 10 walks in the victory.

David Melfi hit a double and a single, while Justin Greene and James Martin singled. Martin drove in a pair of runs. He also joined Jake Mastillo, Marty Carnahan and Green with two walks.

Juan Cerda pitched three shutout innings of relief to get the win. He relived starter Kyle Wellman, who pitched the first four innings and struck out six. Former Butte Miner Liam Sommer also pitched an inning, striking out three for the Tommyknockers.

Kaiden Cardoso hit three hits, including a pair of doubles, to lead the Trappers.

The teams will continue the four-game series with a 7:05 p.m. game Saturday. The series wraps up with a 5:35 game on Sunday.
