Tommyknockers sign catcher David Melfi

The Mining City Tommyknockers Baseball Club announced today the signing of Wagner College catcher David Melfi for the 2021 season.

Melfi is from Jackson, New Jersey, where he played for Jackson Liberty High School. He was a four-year varsity starter on the Jackson Liberty High School baseball team. He is Jackson Liberty High School’s career record holder in hits (127), HRs (19), RBIs (106), 2Bs (45) and runs (98).

He is also a three-time Jersey Shore Carpenter Cup All-Star, Asbury Park Press First Team All-Shore and Class B South Hitter of the Year (2017-19). In 2018, Melfi was named Ocean County Underclass Player of the Year after hitting a school-record .457 with seven HRs, 12 2Bs and driving in 28 runs.

Melfi is pursuing a degree in business administration at Wagner College and is in his Sophomore year. He is said to have a strong arm and dedication to the game.

“I am super excited to be in Butte, Montana this summer and play for Coach (Tom) Carty’s Tommyknockers,” Melfi said in a statement. “. Let’s bring a championship to the city this August. See you all soo.”

“This athlete is outstanding with a fiercely strong arm and a great batting record; we are looking forward to what he can do for the Tommyknockers this season,” Tommyknockers general manager Dane Wagner said.

“David is a young, up and coming D1 catcher from a good catching development program,” Carty said. “He will bring athleticism behind and at the plate.”

The Tommyknockers, an Expedition League expansion team, will play their inaugural season in Butte’s 3 Legends Stadium.
