College women’s basketball
MSU-Northern at Montana Tech, 5:30 p.m.

The Orediggers (2-9, 12-11) open the doubleheader at the HPER Complex against the No. 20 Skylights (5-5, 16-5), who were ranked as high as No. 2 this season. Northern won the first meeting, 71-66, behind a 30-point performance by Butte High graduate Natalee Faupel. The 5-foot-10 junior averages a team-leading 15.2 points per game. Guard Jacy Thompson averages 14.7 points. Freshman Samy McGree averages a team-best 13.0 points per game for the Orediggers, who are coming off Saturday’s huge overtime win at Rocky Mountain College. Fellow Butte High grad Hattie Thatcher averages 12.6 points and 6.7 assists per game.

College men’s basketball
MSU-Northern at Montana Tech, 7:30 p.m.

The Orediggers (1-9, 6-16) are in must-win mode as they take on the Lights (3-7, 14-8) in the nightcap. Northern won the first meeting 74-58 Jan. 15 in Havre. Warren Edmondson, a 6-2 guard averages 13.0 points per game to lead the Lights. He is the lone Northern player averaging in double figures scoring. Jalen Coates’ 17.8 points lead three Orediggers scoring in double digits. Paul Engstrom adds 14.2 points and 7.1 rebounds to the lineup, while Cruz Ginns Jr. averages 12.0 points. True Freshman Lukas Vining, who averages 8.3 points per game, has five double-digit performances in Tech’s last eight games. He scored 15 last time out.

Prep boys’ basketball
Bozeman at Butte High, 7:30 p.m.

The Butte Civic Center will set the scene as the Bulldogs (2-5, 2-10) take on the first-place Hawks (5-1, 11-1) in an Eastern AA game. Aaron Weidenaar, a 6-foot-7 senior, averages 16.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game to lead the Hawks, whose lone loss was a controversial 62-60 decision at home against defending champion Billings Skyview. Senior Trace Bradshaw (6-3) adds 11.1 points and 6.5 rebounds, while senior Bennett Hostetler (5-11) averages 10.45 points and 5.3 boards. Brock Powell posted a double-double to lead Butte High with 10 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday’s 52-39 loss to Great Falls High. Fellow juniors Ryson Lovshin and Evan Anderson also scored 10 points in that game.

Butte Central at Livingston, 7:30 p.m.
The Maroons (8-5) will try to avenge a home loss to the Rangers (5-9) when they hit the road for the non-conference game. Landan Ricketts, a 6-5 senior, scored 25 points, and Livingston beat Butte Central 52-45 Jan. 9 at the Maroon Activities Center. Ricketts averages a Class A-best 24.3 points per game. Junior Nate McGree scored 12 points to lead the Maroons in that loss. Classmate Tanner Kump scored 11 points. McGree is ranked sixth in the Class A with 17.8 points per game. Senior Cole Harper averages 13.0 points per game.

Prep girls’ basketball
Livingston at Butte Central, 7:30 p.m.

The undefeated Maroons (13-0) look for the season sweep of the Rangers (3-11) in the non-conference game at the Maroon Activities Center. Junior Molly Peoples and senior Sierra Pica each scored 12 points as the Maroons overcame a slow start to beat the Rangers 55-32 Jan. 9 in Livingston. Rachel Robbins scored 10 points to lead Livingston in the loss. Peoples is the No. 5 scorer in the Class A with 15.1 points per game. Junior Emily St. John averages 11.8 points, while sophomore Kloie Thatcher averages 10.5. 1 comment

    Heard new information, possible rumor yesterday that Montana Tech Men’s coach has been replaced. Any truth to this?
