Three BC players reach Southwestern A semis

Butte Central’s Tricia Joyce, Aidan Petritz and Guido Ossello have advanced to the semifinals of the Southwestern A Divisional tennis tournament in the Bitterroot Valley.

The boys are playing in Hamilton, while the girls are competing in Corvallis.

Joyce went 2-0 to reach the final four in girls’ singles play. Petritz and Ossello did the same in boys’ doubles.

In all, 11 Maroons are still hanging onto hopes of advancing to the Class A State tournament when action resumes Friday. The top four individuals and doubles teams qualify for the state meet in Kalispell.

David Granell is still alive after going 1-1 on the day on the boys’ singles side. Mati McGree lost her lone match but will keep battling on Friday.

All three girls’ doubles teams from BC are still in the hunt, too. The teams of Shea Davis/Prestynn Weldon, Delaney Hasquet/Avery Kelly and Tess Riordan/Marissa Anderson all went 1-1 on the first day.

Bryson Sestrich went 1-2, while the rest of the Maroons went 0-1.

BC coach Becky Hancock called the day a “great experience” for her young team, even the players who lost out.

“It will give them motivation to continue to get better for next year,” she said.

Like Joyce, Petritz and Ossello won both matches in straight sets.

“They played some great matches today,” Hancock said of her top boys’ doubles tandem. “I am excited to see what tomorrow brings for them.”

Joyce went to state in doubles as a junior. She will try to return as a singles player.

“Tricia is playing tough,” Hancock said. “Singles can take a lot out of you, and she has what it takes to hold her own out there and get it done.”
