Hattie Thatcher shattered the Montana Tech single-game assist record Sunday afternoon, and the Oredigger women’s basketball team opened the season with a 115-52 win over the Northwest Indian College at the HPER Complex. Box Score
Thatcher, who scored 11 points, registered 20 assists as six Orediggers scored in double figures in the lopsided win. The Butte High graduate broke the record of 14 assists set by Sherry Sparks against Doane College in 1990.
Martha Dembek posted a double-double with 25 points and 15 rebounds, both game highs, as the Orediggers fired on all cylinders.
Rachel Ferris tossed in 19 points, while Butte High grad Sammy McGree tossed in 18 points in her first college game. Also, Shayla Mack came off the bench to score 13 points, while Kimi Heng joined Thatcher with 11 points.
Kira Butler’s 16 points led NIC, which fell 107-40 Saturday night at Montana Western.
The Orediggers will play NIC again Monday. The men’s and women’s doubleheader begins at 5:30 p.m.
