Tech’s Sean Benson third at Carroll College Invite

HELENA — Montana Tech junior Sean Benson shot a 4-under-par 67 Tuesday to tie for third overall at the Carroll College Invitational at the Green Meadow Country Club.

Benson’s strong finish followed rounds of 69 and 71 for a 207. That tied with Rocky Mountain College’s Reece Nilsen for third place.

Hunter Weitze of Lewis-Clark State College shot a final-round 67 for a 204 and medalist honors. Rocky Mountain College’s Michael Tait, who shot a 68 Tuesday, took second at 206.

Rocky won the team title. The Battlin’ Bers shot a 278 for an 832 total.

Carroll College took second at 848, followed by LC State at 854 and Montana Tech at 870.

Butte High grads Houston Green and Trey Hoagland finished at 221 and 222. Green hit a 74 Tuesday, while Hoagland shot 69. Ryan Keenan hit 72 for 227, while Jimmy Amundson hit 76 for 230.

With a final-round 284, Rocky won the women’s title at 574.

LC State was a distant second at 610, followed by Carroll at 631, Providence-Great Falls at 637 and Montana Tech at 654.

Gina Kowolchuk of Providence shot a 72 and held on for the individual title at 138. Rocky’s Anna DeMars was second at 140, while fellow Battlin’ Bear Eryn Ellis was third at 141. DeMars shot a final-round 70, while Ellis hit 69.

Tanna Campbell shot an 82 for a 160 and 15th place to lead the Orediggers.

Butte High grad Hailey Ogolin hit 81 for 163 for the Diggers, while Taryn Cambell shot 82 for 164 and Lynzee Dexter shot 87 for a 167.

The Orediggers will head to Lewiston, Idaho, next week for the Lewis-Clark State Invitational.
