Tech’s Sean Benson leads MSU-Northern golf tourney

SHELBY — Montana Tech golfer Sean Benson fired 69 and a 71 Sunday at the Marias Valley Golf Course to take the lead with a 4-under-par 140 at the MSU-Northern golf tournament.

Benson, a true freshman who won the Class AA State individual title while playing for Billings Senior last fall, has a four-shot lead over second-place Jordy Donoven of Rocky Mountain College heading into Monday’s final round.

Chris Lien of Lewis-Clark State College sits in third at plus one.

Montana Tech’s Sean Ryan is tied for ninth place at plus 10, while teammate Cole Noctor is tied for 23rd at plus 16.

The Oredigger men sit in fourth place at 619 after shooting 307 and 312. L-C State leads at 593. The Warriors are followed by Rocky Mountain College at 598, and the University of Great Falls at 618.

On the women’s side, Rocky leads the way at 314 after the first 18 holes. Montana Tech is fifth at 404.

Kayla Clancy of Rocky shot a 2-under 70 to lead the individual standings. Gina Kowolchuk of Great Falls is a distant second at 77.

Taryn Campbell is Tech’s top golfer. She shot a first-round 86. Teammate Hailey Ogolin began her college career with an 88.
