Tech’s Kayser, McQueary named Players of the Week

WHITEFISH — Montana Tech football players Gunnar Kayser and Quinn McQueary were named Frontier Conference Players of the Week, the league announced today.

McQueary was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Kayser took home Defensive Player of the Week. Calvin Connors of Eastern Oregon was named Special Teams Player of the Week.

McQueary is a 6-foot-3, 195-pound junior quarterback from Manhattan. In No. 7 Montana Tech’s 62-10 conference road win over Rocky Mountain College, McQueary was 13 of 20 passing for 278 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.

He also rushed for 28 yards on two carries. McQueary tied a school record for touchdown passes in a single game. He now shares the record with Eric Jacobsen, who passed for five TDs in 1991.

The award is the first for McQueary, who transferred to Tech from Montana State before the 2015 season.

J.D. Ferris of Montana Western, Tanner Gustavsen of Carroll College, Tyrell McGee of Rocky Mountain, Matt Retzlaff of Southern Oregon and Josh Richards of Eastern Oregon were also nominated for the award.

Kayser is a 6-4, 215-pound senior defensive back from Cobert, Washington.

Kayser picked off two passes in Tech’s win at Rocky. He also recorded three solo tackles and three assisted tackles. Kayser, who leads the Frontier with six interceptions, won the award for the second time this season.

David Barnett of Carroll College, Kalliy Ceesay of Eastern Oregon, Cole Jelinek of Rocky Mountain and Riley Martello of Montana Western were also nominated.

Connors is a 5-9, 177-pound junior wide receiver from Winnemucca, Nevada. In No. 11 Eastern Oregon’s 48-14 road conference win over College of Idaho, Connors had one 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Derrick Holt of Montana Tech was also nominated for the award along with Kyle Smith of Carroll College and Sam Sparks of Rocky Mountain College.
