Tech’s Ceartin takes lead at Battlin’ Bears Invitational

Isaiah Weldon hits double eagle

BILLINGS — Montana Tech’s Franchi Ceartin fired a 75 to take the first-day lead at the Battlin Bears Invitational Monday at the Yegen Golf Club.

The freshman holds a one-shot lead over Rocky’s Claire Wright, the winner of the last three tournaments.

As a team, the Tech women a 319 and sit in second place, four shots behind host Rocky. The 319 is the lowest round in school history.

Cierra Sundheim is tied in fourth place at 79, and fellow freshman Sami Benson hit an 82 and is tied for seventh. Junior Emily Kelli is tied for 10th at 89. Another Butte High graduate, freshman Kennedy Lean, shot an 89 and is tied for 1th.

Playing as an individual, Tech’s Lauren Williams hit an 88.

On the men’s side, Tech senior Isaiah Weldon, another Butte High grad, is three shots out of the lead with a 4-under-par 137.

Weldon hit a 70 and a 67. His day included a double eagle on the par-5 fourth hole during the second round. Weldon holed out from 215 yards.

Leader Haydn Driver of Rocky shot 67-67. Sean Ramsbacher is tied for fourth at 140. He shot a pair of 70s. Tech teammates Nick Pasquarello and Matt Hobbs are tied for 14th at 147, and Jace Rhodes is tied for 22nd at 152.

Rocky put up two under par rounds finishing with a 559 (-9) after the first two rounds to take the team lead. The Orediggers are in second at 568.

The tournament concludes Tuesday with 18 holes for the men and women.
