Montana Tech sophomore Sean Benson opened the fall golf season with a hot start on a very cold day.
Benson, a Billings Senior product, shot a 2-over-par 72 and a 2-under 68 at the Butte Country Club Monday to take a share of the lead at the Montana Tech Invitational. He is tied with Lewis-Clark State’s Chris Lien, who shot a 70 on both rounds.
As a team the Orediggers sit in fourth place at 605 after shooting 306 and 299. L-C State leads with a 580 after posting scores of 295 and 285.
Carroll College sits in second at 596, followed by Rocky Mountain College at 597. Tech’s B beam is sixth at 622.
Carroll’s Ben Gardner’s 144 (73-71) was good for third place.
Jimmy Amundson, who is playing for the Tech B team, shot 78 and 73 and is tied for 12th at 151. Freshman Trey Hoagland, a Butte High graduate, is tied for 16th at 153 following a 76 and a 77 in his first collegiate tournament.
Tech’s Troy Wolff is tied for 18th at 154.
The men wrap up the tournament with 18 holes on Tuesday. The women, who played 18 on Monday will also play 18 on Tuesday.
L-C State’s Marissa Louder shot a 79 to take the lead, and teammate Allison Kadinger is tied for second at 80 as the Warriors shot 320 to top the women’s team standings.
Rocky Mountain College is two shots back, while the University of Great Falls is third at 351, Carroll is fourth at 354, Tech is fifth at 374 and MSU-Northern is sixth at 391.
Oredigger Lynzee Dexter shot an 83 and is tied for eighth place to lead the Orediggers.
Also for Tech, Taryn Campbell hit a 90, Megan Steach shot 99 and Hailey Ogolin carded a 102.
