Tech’s Benson, Campbell tied for fifth at Argos Invite

GREAT FALLS — Montana Tech golfers Sean Benson and Taryn Campbell are both tied for fifth place after the first day of the Argos Invitational. (Men’s results; Women’s results)

Benson shot a 75 and a 73 at the par-72 Meadowlark Country Club and sits at 4 over par at 148 heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Rocky Mountain’s Colton Murphy is the lone player to break par. He shot 70 and 72 and tops the leaderboard with a 2-under 142. Chris Lien and Hunter Weitze of Lewis-Clark State are tied for second at even par, while Carroll College golfer Joseph Potkonjak is 2 over.

Rocky tops the team standings at 21 over par. The Battlin’ Bears shot 299 and 298 for a 597. L-C State is 12 back at 609. Host University of Great Falls men are third at 611, followed by Tech at 621 and Carrol at 622.

The Orediggers shot 305 and 316. Tech’s Jimmy Amundson is 12th at 153 after a 73 and an 80, while teammate Ryan Keenan is tied for 13th at 154 with a 76 and 78.

Oredigger David Starcevich is tied for 20th at 157 after a 77 and an 80.

On the women’s side, Great Falls’ Gina Kowalchuk matched par at 73 to take one-shot lead over Eryn Ellis of Rocky Mountain College. Rocky’s Morgan O’Neill shot a 78, while Marissa Louder of Lewis-Clark State card an 80.

Campbell hit 81 and is in a three-way tie for fifth.

The Oredigger women shot a 363 and are in fifth place in the six-team tournament.

Rocky leads the way at 315. LC shot 327, followed by Great Falls at 334 and Carroll at 346.

Tech’s Hailey Ogolin, a Butte High graduate, is tied for 23rd at 90. Teammate Megan Steach is one shot back at 91.

The men and women will conclude the tournament with 18 holes on Tuesday.
