Tech women sign Class C standout

Montana Tech women’s head basketball coach Kerie DePell announce an additional signing for the 2013-14 school year. Multi-sport star Martha Dembek from Winnett signed an NAIA letter of intent to attend school and play basketball for the Orediggers.

“Montana Tech has a great, solid basketball program and I’m really excited to be a part of it,” Dembek said. “Coming from a school where I have six kids in my class, I feel this small school environment is the right fit for me.”

Dembek, a 5-foot-9 all-around athlete, participated in every season of high school athletics while maintaining the highest level of academics.

“Martha is an exciting prospect for us to sign,” DePell said. “She is a great overall athlete, as shown by her success not only in basketball but her track career, too.”

The three-time All-State basketball selection helped lead her team to three conference and district championships. Winnett finished second at the Class C State tournament earlier this month. Dembek was also a three-time state All-Tournament Team honoree. This season Dembek averaged 11.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.5 steals a game. She shot 42 percent from the field and 86 percent from the free throw line.

“She has a really quick first step and can finish when she gets to the basket, and also has an outside game to complete her skill set on offense,” DePell said. “I think she will come in and contribute to our team atmosphere right away, and then learn quickly how to be successful in the Frontier Conference on both ends of the court.”

Dembek earned All-State in cross country and track six separate times. In track and field, she is a long and triple jump state champion. She earned the gold medal in both events as a freshman and the long jump as a sophomore.

Also the valedictorian of her high school, Dembek earned academic All-State ten times to date. When she isn’t running or on the basketball court, she is a member of the student council, National Honor Society, band and 4-H. The 4.0 GPA student plans on majoring in nursing at Montana Tech.

“I was thrilled to learn about the excellent reputation of the nursing program at Tech,” Dembeck said.

Dembek is the daughter of David and Catherine Dembek.

“She is a great fit for our community, and will be a wonderful asset to the campus academically as well,” DePell said.
