Tech-Western women meet in playoffs

The first round of the Frontier Conference women’s basketball playoffs will feature a pair of teams who are very familiar with each other when they take the Kelvin Sampson Court at the HER Complex.

Tipoff is at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Montana Tech and Montana Western played each other three times this season. Two times the teams met in the conference season. The other was a non-conference tilt in Butte.

The Orediggers (16-12) finished third in the conference at 9-7. Western (15-15), which was in play for a home game going into Saturday night’s action, finished sixth at 7-7.

The last meeting was last week in Dillon, and the Bulldogs got the better of the Orediggers, winning 62-60 at the Straugh Gymnasium. Tech won 66-57 Jan. 3 in Butte and 72-61 Oct. 27 in the non-conference game.

Alecia Wilson scored 16 points, including the game-winning bucket, to lead the Bulldogs last week. Sammy Bignell, who averages 15.2 points per game, scored 15, and Brittney Leibenguth tossed in 10.

Mandy Machinal, who averages a league-leading 15.4 points per game, scored 21 to lead the Orediggers, who were again playing without injured post player Kelsey DeWit.

DeWit, who averages 12.7 points and 7.4 rebounds, missed the last three weeks with an ankle injury. Tech coach Kerie DePell said DeWit will play in the playoff game.

Dannii Devenny, who has stepped up to fill in for DeWit, averages 10.7 points per game. Laini Kalumbi averages 9.6.

If the Orediggers win, Tech will play at Carroll College on Friday. The Bulldogs will head to Westminster College for a game Friday if they win.
