Tech spikers open with win

DILLON — Montana Tech’s volleyball team began the Brian Solomon era in style Tuesday, knocking off Montana Western 3-1 at the Straugh Gymnasium.

The Orediggers won the match 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-19. Even though the match featured two Frontier Conference teams, it didn’t count in league standings.

Sydney Norris tallied a match-high 14 kills to lead the Oredigger attack. Chersteen Cline added 10 kills in the win, while Lacey Phelan and Korey Krumm each killed eight.

Kimmy Kavran collected 25 digs to lead the Oredigger backcourt. Freshman Miakyla Sullivan had a solid game at the net, totaling one solo block and 10 assisted blocks.

Brea Mitchell’s 12 kills led the Bulldogs. Charelle Minor and Breanne Kelley tallied eight kills. Shelby Mack and Bailey Branson led the defense with 15 and 12 digs.

Montana Tech hits the road again Thursday to play in a tournament in Spokane.

Tech opens its home slate and the Frontier Conference season Sept. 6 against Western.
