Tech signs two top prep golfers

Montana Tech golf coach Lee LaBreche announced two Montana signees for the fall. Josie Stinson of Belt and Jared Greer of Missoula committed to the Tech golf team for next fall.

“I’m excited to bring these two into our program,” LaBreche said. “They both are very hard workers and are great kids. I know both are as excited to become Orediggers as we are to have them in the program.”

Stinson, a two-time individual state champion in Class C, lead her team to a second place finish at state as a junior and state championship this past spring. It was Belt’s first state championship in golf.

“Josie has both the physical and mental tools to become a very good golfer at our level,” LaBreche said.

Familiar with winning, the three-sport athlete found success in volleyball and basketball. Stinson was part of two divisional titles and a second place finish at state last year in volleyball. In basketball, Belt won three state championships from 2011-13.

Stinson is involved with 4-H, Youth Leadership, Science Olympiad, National Honor Society and Student Senate. She finished high school with a 3.99 GPA and was the valedictorian of her class. She also served as the student body president and senior class president.

Stinson, the daughter of Thad and Michelle Stinson, plans on pursuing a degree in civil engineering.

Greer, who played prep golf at Loyola Sacred Heart High School in Missoula, was one of the top golfers in Class B. He posted three first place finishes, three second place finishes and a third place finish during the regular season. He took third at the divisional and state meets. Loyola finished second at state this year, but was the team state champion from 2011-2013. Greer finished fifth at state as a junior.

“Jared was a member of the Loyola golf program that has been traditionally very strong,” LaBreche said. “He is a big strong kid that can hit the ball a mile.”

From 2012-13, Greer was selected All-Conference, All-State and Academic All-State in golf. He also played football for Loyola and was part of state championships in 2012 and 2013. He was selected All-Conference, All-State and Academic All-State in football as well.

Greer participated in Boys State and has spent hundreds of hours volunteering for a number of organizations. He has a 3.88 GPA and plans on majoring in engineering. Greer’s parents are Bill and Judy Greer.

“Both Jared and Josie were multi-sport athletes in high school and bring some strong athletic tools to our program,” LaBreche said. “They are also great academic students and will fit very well into our program.”

Greer and Stinson join fellow signee Taryn Campbell from Big Timber. Montana Tech returns 11 golfers for the 2014-15 season.

The Frontier Conference opens in Butte this fall with the Montana Tech Invitational September 7-9 at the Butte Country Club.
