Tech golf teams opens season with high hopes

Montana Tech head golf coach Lee LaBreche and the Oredigger golf team head to Shelby this weekend to open the Frontier Conference golf season at Marias Valley Golf Club for the Montana State Northern Invite.

“I’m extremely optimistic for the 2015-16 season,” LaBreche said. “With the returning players on our roster and the recruits we have brought in this year, we hope to make some waves in the Frontier.”

Montana Tech returns three seniors on their roster in Lee Paulson, Sean Ryan and Matt Mullaney. Butte native and sophomore David Starcevich returns as well after showing promise last spring at the Westminster Invitational and Frontier Conference Championship. Starcevich finished fifth at the Westminster Invite and 17th at the Frontier Championship.

“The kids are really excited and have worked hard through the summer and so far this fall,” LaBreche said.

Newcomer Sean Benson could have an early impact for the Orediggers. The Billings Senior grad won the Montana Class AA State title last year and is a three-time All-State honoree.

“It’s really nice with the upper classmen we have,” LaBreche said. “They have been leading through example and have taught the younger kids so much. The team chemistry has been incredible.”

Taryn Campbell is the lone returner on the women’s team. The sophomore finished 13th at the Frontier Conference Championship last season. She is joined by Butte High grads Hailey Ogolin and Ashten McCloskey.

“I’m excited to have Hailey join our program,” LaBreche said. “She excelled at the high school ranks and is expected to be a contributor for us this fall.”

Ogolin finished tenth as a senior at the State Championship and was in the top 20 as a junior. McCloskey finished just outside of the top 20 last year and was second on the Butte High team.

“The energy around the team is something I have not seen in my three years at Tech,” LaBreche said. “I look forward to see how things shake out this weekend at the MSU-Northern Tournament and the rest of the conference season.”

Montana Tech is in Helena for the Carroll College Invitational at the Green Meadow Country Club September 28-29. They travel to Billings for the MSU-Billings Fall Classic in non-conference action on October 7-9.
