DICKINSON, N.D. — Big Steven Strachan hit a grand slam Thursday night, leading the Mining City Tommyknockers to a 14-7 Expedition League win over the Badlands Big Sticks at Dakota Community Bank and Trust Field. (Boxscore)
Mike Decker also homered for the Knockers, who pulled into a second-place tie with the Sticks at 14-11 in the Lewis Division. Both teams are three games behind Souris Valley.
With the win, the Tommyknockers salvaged a split of the four-game series.
Strachan’s big fly put the Tommyknockers on top for good at 4-0 in the top of the second inning. The Butte club broke open a 4-3 game with five runs in the fifth.
David Melfi doubled while going 4 for 5. He scored three runs and drove in two. Judah Wilbur and Justin Greene each hit a double and a single, while Miles Hartsfield and Seth Lucero each hit two singles.
Kyle Wellman pitched into the sixth and got the win despite giving up seven earned runs. Former Butte Miner Liam Sommer pitched three and two thirds scoreless innings to get the save. He struck out four and walked two.
Wyatt Setian and Travis Ray Jr. homered for the Big Sticks, who come to Butte for a three-game series starting Friday. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at 3 Legends Stadium.
The game starts the final six-game home stand of the season for the Tommyknockers.
