The lightning flashes followed by the rain-and-hailstorm that washed across Butte early Thursday evening wiped out the Butte Miners’ American Legion baseball doubleheader with the Bitterroot Red Sox that was taking place at 3 Legends Stadium.
Bitterroot had a 7-4 first-game edge in the top of the fifth inning when the umpires sent the ballplayers to their respective dugouts because of the lightning seen. The players never got back as a heavy rain soon followed and then a long and pounding hail fall encored, rendering the field unplayable.
Butte head coach Jim LeProwse said later the twin bill will not be made up due it not being of conference games. The Miners will play two road doubleheaders this weekend to end their regular season — at Dillon on Friday at 4 p.m. and at Bozeman on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Butte will play host to the district tournament, beginning next Thursday (July 23).
