State AA boys’ hoops, first round

BOZEMAN — Following are capsule roundups from the first round Thursday of the state Class AA high school boys’ basketball tournament being played in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse:

Great Falls High 74, Helena Capital 72 (OT) — The first game of the boys’ side of the tournament was a blood-pumper before Drew Wyman sank two free throws, his 36th and 37th points of the game, to lift Great Falls HIgh to the overtime win. The Bison held a six-point lead in the final minute of overtime before Capital fired in three straight 3-pointers, one answered by Wyman, and sent the game into the OT period tied 65-all. Five of Wyman’s dozen field goals were from 3-point distance. Levi Torgerson supported him with 12 points. The 15-7 Bison will play Billings Skyview in Friday’s 6:30 semifinal. Brayden Koch connected on a red-hot eight of nine shots from beyond the 3-point border while scoring 32 points for Capital. Parker Johnston notched 17 points, Shane Haller 12 and Trevor Swanson 10. The Bruins are 16-6 for the season going into a Friday noon loser-out game versus Butte High.

Billings West 44, Missoula Sentinel 39 —Josh Erbacher scored 13 points and Neil Daily 10 as Billings West, Eastern AA’s regular-season champion, pulled out the win, despite a 3-for-6 performance at the free throw line. The Golden Bears are 19-2 this season and will go against undefeated Missoula Hellgate in the 8 p.m. semifinal on Friday. Alex Germer scored 17 points to lead Sentinel, now 17-6 heading into a 1:30 loser-out game with Bozeman on Friday.

Missoula Hellgate 65, Bozeman 42 — Reigning Montana Gatorade Player of the Year Rollie Worster pumped in 24 points as Hellgate stayed undefeated this year with the victory, avenging last year’s loss to Bozeman in the state championship game. Worster, a Utah State signee, also grabbed 10 rebounds. Abe Johnson, a U.S. Military Academy appointee, contributed 11 points and eight rebounds to the win while Cam LaRance tallied 16 points. Brett Clark led Bozeman with 10 points and Jackson Coles netted nine. Hellgate, 22-0, will play Billings West in the Friday 8 p.m. nightcap semifinal. Bozeman, 12-11, will go into elimination-round play against Missoula Sentinel at 1:30.
