Retired coach John Thatcher will hold a summer of individual fundamental basketball development. The 90-minute sessions will take place Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Maroon Activities Center and McKinley Gym from May 19 through Aug 28. Individual workout times can be negotiated. The sessions will emphasize ball handling, shooting, post play and passing. Cost for Thatcher’s fundamental sessions are $50 per week or $20 per session. To sign up, call Thatcher at 490-7182.
The Maroon Activities Center will sponsor a basketball academy style training program this summer. The Southwest Montana Basketball Academy will offer one-on-one, and small group basketball training opportunities for boys and girls aged 6 and older. The program will also offer a six-week strength and conditioning program for young female athletes. The basketball training program will offer individualized skill development opportunities for players of all levels. From beginners to the varsity level, the SWMBA will focus on helping players gain confidence on the court, improve as players, and enjoy the game of basketball. The program will work with players to develop shooting, scoring, ball handling, passing, rebounding and defensive skills. Interested players may sign up for one-on-one and small group sessions on a per hour basis. The strength and conditioning program for the young female athlete will begin June 10 and continue through late July. The program, which will be open to girls entering sixth grade through high school, will focus on enhancing athletic performance, improving strength and flexibility, and reducing injury rates. The program will feature the Jump School ACL Injury Prevention Program, which is a must for young female athletes of all sports. The program will consist of three one-hour training sessions each week for 6 weeks. The basketball and strength programs will be directed by Quinn Peoples, who currently plays college basketball at Montana State University Billings. Several other current college players and high school coaches will also be involved in providing instruction. The Butte Central 2014 Champions Football Camp will be held July 28-31 at the Torger Oaas Maroon Field next to the Maroon Activities Center. A camp for players entering second through sixth grades will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. each day. Cost of that camp is $37. A camp for players in seventh through 12th grades runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m. each night. That camp costs $50. Each additional family member costs $23, and each camper will receive a T-shirt. Butte High’s football team will host a series of camps from players from 3 years old through high school age. All three camps will be held at East Middle School and run by Butte High’s coaching staff. The Little Dogs Camp is for players age 3 through third grade. It will be held July 28-28 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Cost is $30. The Dogs Camp for players entering fourth through eighth grade will be July 28-30. The camp will cost $40 and run from noon to 2 p.m. each day. The Dogs Camp for high school players is July 28-31. It runs from 9 to 11 a.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m. each day of the camp. The ninth annual Bulldog Soccer Camp will be held July 28-31 at the Jeremy Bullock Memorial Soccer Complex. The camp is for boys and girls entering third through 12th grades next school year. It will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. Cost is $75 per athlete. Two campers from the same family will cost $95, while three or more will be $119. Eric Zahler, the Butte High boys’ head coach, will conduct the camp along with Butte High girls’ head coach Kevin Petritz. Entry form
The Butte Family YMCA’s summer schedule includes five sessions of swimming lessons this summer. Under the direction of Mavis Bentley, the swim sessions aim to teach every child in the community how to swim. Bentley has 30 years of experience as a master swim instructor. More information
The Butte Tennis Association and the Butte-Silver Bow Parks and Recreation Department have scheduled a series of summer camps for youth and adult tennis players. Camp sessions will run from June 9-12, July 7-10 and August 11-14 at the Father Sheehan Park courts. Cost for each camp $30 for members and $40 for non members. Cost includes a T-shirt. The University of Montana Western football program is hosting a football camp Aug. 8-9. The camp will be led by head Bulldog football coach B.J. Robertson and his staff. Current Montana Western players will be on hand to instruct during sessions as well. The cost is $40 per camper and includes camp shirt. The campers will receive individual instruction from the camp staff on fundamental techniques and participate in games and competition.
