Frank Spear, a 1962 Boys’ Central graduate, and Ron Ueland, a graduate from the 1970 class at Butte Central, will be featured speakers at the 100th Anniversary of Maroon Athletics. They are both members of the Butte Sports Hall of Fame.
Spear was an all-around athlete at Butte Central. The Holy Savior product competed in football and basketball for the Maroons. Frank was selected first team All-State in football following the 1961 season. During that same school year, Spear was picked first team All-State in basketball for the Maroons. He became only the fifth Butte Central athlete selected as a first team All-State in football and basketball. Spear joined the elite group of Oley Reardon, Danny Hanley, Jim McCaughey and Tom Lester as first team All-State performers in more than one sport. Spear was inducted into the Butte Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
Ueland was a two-year starter in football for the Maroons in 1968 and 1969. Ueland played middle linebacker and also started on the offensive line. He was the captain and a first team All-State selection on the 1969 Butte Central football team that won the state championship. The team produced a school record of 2,788 rushing yards, an average of 309 yards a game. The mark is still a school record today. Ueland played for Montana State where he was selected as a first team All-Big Sky Conference player in 1973 as a middle linebacker. He was inducted into the Butte Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.
