The Butte High boys soccer team hosted Missoula Sentinel today. With all the recent rain in the Mining City, the field at Bulldog Memorial looks great. Unfortunately for the young Bulldogs team, the goals for the Spartans were also raining. After a brief lightning delay in the 2nd half, Missoula Sentinel ousted Butte High 10-0.
Starting 3 freshmen and 4 sophomores, the Bulldogs were outmatched by 9 Spartan seniors. The Bulldogs had numerous chances to score but could never capitalize. One bright spot for the Bulldogs was freshman goalkeeper Johan Thieszen who stopped 2 penalty kicks in the match. Another was the consistent never give up play of Jack Luoma, Mack Williams, and Obadiah Breeton in the mid-field.
After settling for a tie on Bulldog Memorial last fall, the Spartans came out inspired and dominated possession with accurate passing and jumped out to a very quick 3-0 lead. Still the Bulldogs had a few fast break counters and could have scored in the first half but still were down 5-0 at the half. To start the 2nd half, the Spartans again scored very quickly catching the Bulldogs a little flat footed.
Butte High coach Cody Carpenter shared, “Size, speed, strength, experience, and ball control all matter in this sport–we were out done in all of these areas today. Still, for most of the game, I was happy with the teamwork and fight that our young team put up against a very good Spartan team.”
The Bulldogs have not topped the Spartans since rejoining the Western AA in 2019.
Next up, the Bulldogs travel to take on 4-time defending state champion Missoula Hellgate on September 9 at 10 am.
