Soennichsen, Pochervina heading to State AA tennis

BOZEMAN — Butte High’s girls’ doubles tennis players Destine Soennichsen and Keeley Pochervina are heading to the Class AA State tournament.

The Bulldog senior duo battled back to take third place Saturday at the Eastern AA Divisional tournament, which was played at Bozeman High School and Montana State University. The top four singles players and doubles teams move on.

The state tournament begins Thursday in Kalispell, and Soennichsen will be make her second straight trip. She advanced with doubles partner Ellie Kuoppola a year ago.

Soennichsen and Pochervina beat Bozeman’s Bree Luther and Rosie Mokwa 6-4, 6-4 in the third-place match. Earlier, the Butte girls knocked off Bozeman’s Sasha Hathaway and Victoria Peterson 6-2, 7-6 (4) in a loser-out match.

The Butte teammates fell in the semifinals on Friday.

The season is over for the rest of the Bulldog tennis players. Cameron Cassidy came within one win of advancing to state in girls’ doubles. Teammate Riley Duffy was two matches away.

Erik Casagranda and Riley Walsh missed a trip to state by one win in boys’ doubles. Aidan Francisco and Andrew Kober each advanced to Saturday before losing out in boys’ singles play.

Jenna Sanders and Aspen Lovshin did the same in girls’ doubles.
