Skyview uses hat trick to top Bulldog boys

Two Skyview players dealt a full house of goals against Butte High as the Billings team outkicked the Bulldogs 6-2 Friday in a Class AA Eastern Conference high school boys’ soccer match at the Jeremy Bullock Memorial Soccer Fields.
Senior captain Ryne Icenoggle notched a hat trick, scoring three of the Falcons’ first four goals, and senior Trey Hale tallied twice. Icenoggle hit on a breakaway in the 23rd minute for the first score of the game, then later, in the second half, added a penalty point and a liner across the face of the net set up D. C. Chelgren.
Hale’s tallies were a rebound shot just before halftime following a block by Butte High’s Travis Williams of a shot by another Skyview attacker, and a kick into the upper right corner off an assist by Icenoggle for the last goal of the match.
The Falcons’ other goal was by Branden Kinghorn in the 53rd minute. It also traveled across the face on a misdirection from a pass from the other side by Sam Cline for the assist.
Bulldog scores were by Williams on a penalty kick that cut his team’s deficit to 3-1 in the 41st minute, and by freshman Trevyn Roth near the end. It was a direct kick that ricocheted hard off a Skyview defender and into the net for an own goal. Williams’ shot was awarded after Roth was pushed to the ground. The penalty kicked squirted through the hands of Skyview goalie Liam Berger and into the goal.
The Bulldogs’ Shaun Villa nearly booted in a score as it, too, slipped through Berger’s grasp of the rangy keeper was able to recover and keep the ball out of the box.
Butte High head coach Eric Zahler said the Bulldogs are close to putting together a winning performance, but were just a step behind the Falcons at some most inopportune moments.
“We didn’t play well, but we had some moments of brilliance,” Zahler said. “We still have to work on our combinations on our offensive third.”
Skyview found some success in patiently dribbling and passing the ball out front and drawing the Butte High defense toward midfield, then threading downfield passes to get behind the Bulldogs for shots on goal. A loss of Butte High junior midfielder Zach Archibald to what appeared to be an ankle injury cost the team some veteran savvy late in the contest.
“We knew coming in that Skyview would be a team that stepped on every bad touch,” Zahler said. “I know we gave them a lot of bad touches today,”
The Bulldog defense played fairly well. The Falcons did not exactly unleash an onslaught. They missed their first five shots on goal, some because of challenges from Butte High defenders. Williams and Brock Powell were stoppers in the middle and lone senior Andrew Howery controlled the back, Zahler noted. Skyview totaled eight shots on goal. Bulldog goalkeeper Erik Rosa snared six saves.
“These guys have a ton of potential,” Zahler said about the Butte High players. “They are just on the verge. It’s just one more touch, one more run, a little more talking (to each other), which we work on every day in the practice. These kids can have success.
“I haven’t seen anyone we can’t play with or can’t beat.”
The Bulldogs go to Billings on Saturday to look for their first win of the season in a 1 p.m. conference game against Billings West. Skyview improved to 2-1 this year with Friday’s victory.
