Butte High hols down third place in team standings
MISSOULA — Butte High sits in third place after the first round of the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic at Missoula Sentinel. (Results)
With six wrestlers advancing to the semifinals, the Bulldogs are also in position to score some serious points on Day 2. Butte High sent 12 wrestlers to the tournament, and 11 will wrestle into Saturday, when action resumes at 9:30 a.m.
Flathead took the lead in the 27-team tournament, scoring 176.5 points. University High from Washington sits in second at 125.5 points, a half point better than Butte High. Coeur d’Alene, Idaho is fourth at 109.
Trey Whitlock, Kyler Raiha, Kip Pumnea, Maverick McEwen, Riley Downey and Mason Christian each reached the semifinals. All six posted two wins after receiving a first-round bye.
Whitlock will take on Aiden Downing of Flathead in the semifinals at 113. Fellow senior Kyler Raiha will meet Mason Gutenberg of Belgrade in the 120-pound semifinals.
At 132 pounds, Pumnea, a junior, will take on Asher Kemppainen of Flathead in the final four.
McEwen, a sophomore, will battle Helena Capital’s Carson DesRosier at 138 pounds, and Downey, a senior, will face Orin Thivierge of Havre in the 170-pound semis.
Christian, a junior, takes on Jace DeShazer of Libby at 182 pounds.
Ried Whitlock (at 103 pounds) is still battling on the consolation side. So are Karson Pumnea (126), Connor Konda (145), Morgan McClernan (160) and Kade Schleeman (285).
Butte High will also enter a team in the John Fisher tournament Saturday at Missoula Big Sky. Butte High’s girls’ team, which placed second last week at the Tom LeProwse Invitational in Bozeman, will compete in a mixer at Missoula Hellgate on Saturday.
