BELGRADE — The Dillon Cubs jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held off the Butte Muckers for a 6-3 win Thursday in the opening round of the Southern A District tournament.

Nathan Simkins had a huge day at the dish and on the bump for the Cubs.

The leadoff hitter went 4 for 5 with three runs scored to lead the Dillon offense. He also struck out four Muckers and walked three in seven innings to get the win. He surrendered three runs, two of which were earned.

R.J. Fitzgerald went 2 for 5 with two RBIs for the Cubs, who take on the Deer Lodge Wranglers at 4 p.m. Friday. Deer Lodge routed the Helena Reps 16-2 in Thursday’s first game.

Logan Wilson struck out four in two innings to get the save.

Trey Berger pitched six innings, striking out four and walking four for the Muckers. Robin Bagley, Bryson Henningsen, Alex Kober, Austin Gerry, Ryan Shultz and Logan LaFromboise hit singles. Shultz and LaFromboise drove in runs.

The Muckers take on the Reps in 10 a.m. loser-out game on Friday. Bracket
