MILWAUKEE — Butte High sophomore Will Silk is a national record holder.
Silk, 16, captured set a meet record while winning the 3,000-meter race at the National Age Group Pack Style Championships over the weekend at the Pettit National Ice Center. His winning time was 4 minutes, 9.04 seconds.
Jaylin Li of Bay State placed second in 4:09.36.
The previous record holder was Ethan Cepuran, who posted a time of 4:10 in 2016. Cepuran was on the 2022 U.S. Olympic team and won a bronze at the Beijing Games as part of the team pursuit.
Silk placed third overall in the Junior B division after placing third in the 1,000 (1:22) and fourth in the 500 (40.45). Silk also placed seventh after a fall in the 1,500 (2:58.32). Junior B is an age-group category.
The national championship comes less than a year after Silk was named 2020-21 Long Track Development Skater of the Year by U.S. Speedskating.
