Shootout starts today

The Sixth Annual Butte Depot Crossroads Shootout basketball tournament tips off today in the Mining City.

Sixty-five teams will compete in five gyms — the Maroon Activities Center, East Middle School, McKinley Annex, Butte Central High School and Whittier Elementary.

The tournament is a star-studded affair. University of Montana players Ali Hurley, Katie Baker, and Kenzie De Boer are playing on Leo McCarthy Insurance team in women’s open division.

Red Tiger has won the men’s open the last two years which consists of current and former Montana Western players Terry Hauser, Kyle Erickson, Chad Meyer and Jordan Overstreet. Hauser, of course, is the Butte High boys’ head basketball coach.

Montana Tech star Adam Greger is playing on the Florence team in the men’s B.

Tournament director Mike Bauer, a former men’s head basketball coach at Montana Tech, will be playing with a team that includes Jaiger Allen, Matt Luedtke, Ceylon Tayler and Dallas Leslie.

Bauer said the 30 out of town referees will work the tournament. All are volunteering their time.

The proceeds from the tournament benefit Mariah’s Challenge.
