Several Butte High tennis players survive Day 1

HELENA — Butte High’s tennis team has a handful of players left fighting heading into Friday’s second day of the Southern AA Divisional tennis match.

The top four individuals and doubles teams will move on to the Class AA State meet, which is next week in Great Falls.

A Bulldog vs. Bulldog battle with a trip to state on the line in the girls’ doubles could possibly be in the cards when action resumes Friday morning.

Butte High’s No. 1 team of Sydney Doyle and Sierra Meza are will play in the semifinals of the consolation bracket after falling in the semifinals on Thursday.

Bulldog teammates Devin Amtmann and Aspen Lovshin will take on Ana Salyards and Sarah Kubicka of Helena Capital. The winner of that match will play Doyle and Meza.

Butte High’s other two doubles tandems — Shandelle Whalen/Maisy Taylor and Kennedy Lean/Abby Kelly — bowed out on Thursday.

Bulldogs Emily Kelly and Carley Trefts are still in the hunt in the consolation bracket of girls’ singles. Kelly fell in the semifinals.

Sevanna Challeen of Butte won a match before dropping two to end the season.

In boys’ singles, Kryptin Bercier is the only Bulldog still playing. He beat out teammate Abe Shaw in a loser-out match to advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket. Butte’s Declan McMahon and Cayden Dziak went 0-2 on the opening day.

Butte High saw two teams win a match before falling in boys’ doubles Zach Johnson and Dillon Ferry are still playing Friday, as are Aidan Francisco and Russell Park.

Kolby Raiha and Carsten Quam went 1-2 to close the season. Kellen Lean and Andrew Kober also bowed out.
